Communication is Key.

Communication is one of the most important indicators of success when partnering in any capacity. Whether you are partnering with a company that is physically next door, or across oceans, communication can make or break your relationship.

If you have two teams working together and both teams are filled with great, hard working people, but you suffer from miscommunication, then your project will take longer to complete, will cost more as you take time to fix errors, and will cost you energy and motivation as the process is just harder than it needs to be.

But good, transparent, and consistent communication can make up for a lot of other difficulties during a project or partnership. Here are three indicators that a company is prepared to come to the table of a business relationship with good communication.

Same, or Similar, Timezone.

Timing is crucial with communication. If your software team or partner is on the other side of the world, then when are you going to meet with them? At 4 am or 11 pm? If you use a Scrum methodology, and meet every day, then you are looking at early morning or late night meetings every single day. If there is an emergency at noon, then you might have to wait up to 12 hours for anyone to take care of it.

If your software partner or provider is in your time zone, then you can communicate with them easily in real time. Meetings are at convenient times for both of you and emergencies and requests are taken care of as soon as they come up. That’s why nearshoring is such a good option for software services. 

English Language.

This is a very basic need. You need to be able to understand your team. Your software partner/provider needs to be able to understand what you need and communicate what is going on. Those daily Scrum meetings with your developers will be useless if neither of you understand each other.

You have more chances of success when looking for a nearshore software provider because you are looking in countries where the English language is greatly valued and taught. If we are talking about countries like Costa Rica, then you are set because the accent is very light and the English education is very good. You and your team members will be able to understand each other much easier than if they were across the world.

Communication Technology.

When you are in the same time zone, it is really easy to communicate digitally. Between instant messaging, email, and video calls, you won’t even feel like you are in different countries.

With instant messaging, such as Slack or Skype, you can communicate with programmers and other software professionals whenever you want to, requesting, getting answers, and answering questions whenever you need to. Group instant message chats are ideal for coordinating a team. While email isn’t new, it is better than ever and a great way to send documents, longer instructions, and communicating non-emergency issues at any time of the day or night. Video calls help you feel like you are just in the nextdoor office, especially as the quality of technology and internet improves.
