Outsourcing or Nearshore?

Let’s start off by defining these two concepts. Outsourcing software is the general term for seeking software services outside of the United States. The term that comes to most people’s minds when they think about this is offshoring. But here at Avantica, we prefer the term nearshoring. 

Nearshoring is when you seek software services from a company that resides in a time zone that is close to, or the same, as yours. It’s in a country that is physically closer to yours and more likely to share aspects of your culture and language.

The Importance of Time Zone

Time zone is one of the most important factors in a successful software partnership. Why? Because communication is the most important quality in a successful relationship. When your partner company is in your time zone, then you will be communicating with them during the same business hours. You can expect prompt response and timely fixes or changes.

Physical face-to-face interaction is also an important part of building up a business relationship, even with outsourcing. Especially with outsourcing! You can gain all of the confidence in the world with your workforce, simply by meeting them in person. Don’t underestimate the power of a handshake.

The Importance of Culture

If you are in a position to be working with a team of people day in and day out, it is important for you to understand each other deeply. Sharing a similar culture is a huge step towards that instinctual understanding. What do we mean by instinctual understanding? Here are some examples:

If you need to request a change or improvement, how will they respond? In a way that makes sense to you?

If you need a software professional to talk to a client or internal executive, what kind of professional language will they use? Will it be appropriate by your culture’s standards?

If you need a team to make suggestions for your company, will they make sense according to your company’s economy and social standards?

When culture is wildly different, you might not feel comfortable answering these questions. But when culture is similar and in-tune, you can predict. And being able to predict is a great way to feel confident with your team’s work.

Being able to communicate effectively, trust your team, and predict how interactions and work will be, then you have a team that is ready for success. An outsourcing partnership is

just like any other partnership and you should look for those factors that will encourage peace, productivity, and growth.
